Le marché de Kantamanto, à Accra, reçoit chaque semaine environ 1 500 tonnes de vêtements de seconde main. Près de la moitié finit en déchet en quelques jours, selon une enquête de 2024 de Greenpeace Africa.
Au Kenya, les importateurs font entrer chaque année près de 900 millions de vêtements, et environ la moitié arrivent abîmés ou de trop mauvaise qualité pour être portés, finissant brûlés à l’air libre ou déversés le long de la rivière Nairobi.
