👨🏿‍🚀TechCabal Daily – Equity, but make it liquid

Flutterwave employees can now borrow cash against the value of their company shares, without having to sell them. Africa's largest payment company has partnered with Techdollar, a US-based private-credit startup, to offer shareholders a way to access liquidity while holding onto their equity. It is a quiet but significant shift in how startup wealth can work on the continent.

The problem this solves is one many startup employees know well. When you join early and get paid partly in equity, your shares can look impressive on paper as the company's valuation climbs through successive funding rounds. But that paper wealth stays locked until the company is sold or another investor agrees to buy your shares directly. Getting cash out has historically meant finding a buyer, which is not always easy or quick.

Secondary sales do happen. When Nigerian fintech Moniepoint raised $110 million in 2024, at least two senior employees sold portions of their shares, walking away with $850,000 and $20,000 respectively. Flutterwave's arrangement with Techdollar takes a different approach: shareholders borrow against their shares as collateral and keep the equity intact.

Whether more African startups and their partners follow this model is the question worth watching.
