MTN Nigeria becomes first telco to cross 100 million subscribers

MTN Nigeria has crossed 100 million subscribers for the first time, becoming the country’s first telecom operator to reach the milestone and further widening its lead over rivals.

The company ended July with 100.86 million subscribers, according to the latest industry data from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), up from 98.64 million in June. The addition of more than 2.2 million subscribers was MTN’s strongest monthly growth so far this year and its biggest since November 2024.

The growth gives MTN control of more than half of Nigeria’s mobile market, with a 51.76% share, giving it a scale that could reshape competition as operators vie for the country’s next wave of mobile and digital customers.

“This is the first time a Nigerian telco has crossed the 100-million active-subscriber threshold. None had reached this figure even before the NIN-SIM linkage exercise. MTN’s Nigerian operation now accounts for nearly one-third of its 317.7 million global subscriber base as of June 2026,” said Osita Odafi, a telecom industry expert.
