GoLemon, the Lagos-based grocery delivery startup founded by former Paystack employees, is shutting down after failing to raise additional funding needed for its next phase, closing a two-year attempt to build a cheaper way for Nigerian households to buy food.
The company stopped accepting orders in July 2026 and will shut its customer support channels on Sunday, August 2, it said in a statement shared with TechCabal on Wednesday. GoLemon said it delivered tens of thousands of orders across Lagos since launching in 2024, with an average basket of about ₦43,700 ($32).
“We saw clear demand for planned, large-basket grocery shopping,” the company said. “What we didn’t reach, within the capital and time available, was making the wider business self-sustaining without further outside capital.”
GoLemon’s shutdown offers a window into one of African e-commerce’s hardest business models. While the startup says individual grocery orders were profitable, it never generated enough volume to cover the fixed costs of running its own supply chain.
