African startups raise $2.49B in 9 months as Q3 rebounds

African startups closed out the first nine months of 2026 with $2.49 billion raised across 315 disclosed deals. That marks 7.8% year-on-year growth compared to the $2.30 billion raised across 403 deals in the same period in 2025. Fewer deals, more money. The math tells its own story.

After a slow first half, Q3 2026 came in strong. The quarter alone pulled in $1.025 billion across 167 deals, up from $785 million across 149 deals in Q3 2025. September kept the energy going, with investors writing larger checks into energy infrastructure, mobility, and digital payments platforms.

On the country rankings, Nigeria leads the continent with $624 million raised across the first nine months. Egypt sits second at $396 million, followed by Benin at $345 million, Kenya at $297 million, and South Africa at $279 million.

Venture capital funds are also in a strong position. LPs committed over $1.7 billion to African fund managers in the first half of 2026, and Q3 added another $1.23 billion in new commitments. Total capital raised by fund managers between Q1 and Q3 now stands at $3.08 billion, spanning climate tech, private credit, and early-stage equity.

All that dry powder is promising, but access is not automatic. Founders looking to tap into these new funds will need to look beyond traditional equity, get comfortable with venture debt, and show the kind of unit economics that today's investors actually want to see.
