The Super Falcons of Nigeria began their quest for a record-extending 11th Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title got off to the worst possible start as they suffered a stunning 3-2 defeat to tournament debutants Malawi in their Group C opener in Rabat.
The defending champions entered the tournament as overwhelming favourites, but Malawi produced one of the biggest upsets in WAFCON history with a fearless display that exposed defensive frailties in the Nigerian side.
Despite fighting back on two occasions, the Super Falcons were unable to prevent defeat as Malawi capitalised on their chances to secure a famous victory in their first-ever WAFCON match. The result marks Nigeria's first defeat to a tournament debutant and immediately puts pressure on the nine-time African champions in the race for a place in the knockout stages.
The disappointing start leaves head coach Justine Madugu with plenty to address before Nigeria's next Group C fixture. The Super Falcons can not leave room for error are to keep their title defence alive and secure qualification for the quarter-finals. with Zambia and Egypt still to come.
