Unsafe schools threaten national security, IGP says

Tunji Disu, Nigeria's Inspector-General of Police, is sounding the alarm. Speaking at the 7th Annual Summit held by EWAN in Lagos, Disu warned that insecurity in schools is no longer just an education problem. It is a national security threat.

The IGP's message was pointed: when schools are unsafe, the consequences ripple far beyond the classroom. Children who cannot learn in peace become communities that cannot grow in stability, and that instability eventually lands at the feet of the state.

The Lagos summit, now in its seventh year, brought this conversation to the center at a moment when school safety remains a painful and unresolved concern across the country. That the IGP showed up to make this case in person signals that the conversation may finally be shifting from awareness to urgency.

The question now is what comes after the summit.
