Uganda: Besigye, Lutale Ask Court to Halt Treason Trial, Cite Alleged Abduction and Rights Violations

Dr. Kizza Besigye and Hajji Obeid Lutale are fighting back. The two men, currently facing treason charges in Uganda, have taken their case to the High Court Criminal Division and are asking the court to throw out the prosecution entirely.

Their argument is direct: they should not be on trial at all. Their legal teams contend that the case against them began with an unlawful abduction from Kenya, followed by illegal detention under military custody, and a series of violations of their constitutional rights. In their view, a prosecution built on that foundation cannot stand.

The High Court Criminal Division now holds the question. Whether the judges agree that the manner in which the accused were brought before the court poisons the case itself is the decision everyone is waiting for.
