Two Nigerian writers are among the finalists for one of the UK's most exciting opportunities for emerging voices. Ope Adedeji and Svetlana Chigozie Onye have both made the shortlist for the 2026 4thWrite Prize, a £1,000 short story competition open to unpublished writers of colour aged 18 and over living in the UK or Ireland.

The prize is run by publisher 4th Estate in association with the Guardian, and this year carries extra weight as the competition celebrates its 10th anniversary. Getting onto the shortlist at this milestone edition is no small thing.

For Adedeji and Onye, the recognition signals that Nigerian storytelling continues to find its footing in British literary spaces. Watch this space to see who takes home the £1,000 prize.
