The Nigerian Association of Dermatologists Launches the “Embrace Your Skin” Campaign | Get the Scoop

On February 5, 2026, a group of leading dermatologists gathered at the LUTH Dermatological Clinic on Harvey Road, Yaba, to officially launch a campaign that many in the medical community say is long overdue. The Nigerian Association of Dermatologists (NAD) introduced its nationwide "EmbraceYourSkin" initiative, a public awareness drive urging Nigerians to protect their health and celebrate their natural skin tone. The event, hosted by Eucerin, brought together doctors, health advocates, journalists, and stakeholders from across the healthcare and beauty sectors.

The medical concerns driving the campaign are serious. NAD highlighted that skin bleaching, which includes topical creams, oral tablets, cosmetic procedures, and even intravenous treatments, carries risks far beyond the surface. The Association pointed to rising incidences of skin cancers, treatment-resistant fungal infections, organ damage affecting the liver and kidneys, and severe allergic reactions. Most alarming, Prof. Dasetima Altraide, President of NAD, noted that children and unborn babies are being exposed to harmful bleaching substances, with some pregnant women reportedly ingesting products to lighten their unborn children.

The numbers behind the campaign are striking. According to WHO Afro Region and iAHO 2023 data cited by NAD, skin bleaching prevalence in Nigeria sits somewhere between 40% and 84%. The country has been described in global health circles as both "the world capital of skin bleaching" and "the skin-lightening hothouse of the world."

Prof. Altraide called on pharmacists, regulatory bodies, and the media to join the effort, saying the Association's mission is to "educate, protect, and empower Nigerians to embrace their natural skin tones." NAD also acknowledged NAFDAC and the Federal Ministry of Health, praising recent government regulations on cosmetic safety as a timely and critical step forward.

The question now is whether this campaign will shift a deeply rooted cultural conversation, and who else will show up to the table.
