Tech sector set for accelerated growth

The sandstone façade of the Sultan Hussein Kamel Palace rises from Cairo's bustling Heliopolis district. The early twentieth-century palace was once a symbol of Egypt's aristocratic past. Today, however, it has been repurposed as one of the most important hubs in Egypt's innovation economy.

Inaugurated by the President in 2022 and launched as an innovation hub under the Egypt Digital Initiative of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, the Cairo Creativa Innovation Hub is home to the local operations of Plug and Play - the global startup accelerator. The palace now hosts entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, policymakers and corporate partners working to build the next generation of Egyptian technology companies. It serves a role similar to Cairo's Greek Campus downtown: a gathering point where ideas, capital and talent converge.

The symbolism is difficult to miss. A palace once associated with Egypt's old elite now functions as a launchpad for a new generation of founders seeking to transform sectors ranging from financial services and logistics to healthcare and artificial intelligence. More importantly, it reflects the evolution of Egypt itself. Over the past decade, Egypt has emerged as one of Africa's most successful technology ecosystems.

For Karima El Hakim, Africa partner, Plug and Play, who launched the hub in Egypt in partnership with the government, the decision by one of the world's largest innovation platforms to establish a presence in Cairo reflected growing international confidence in Egypt's startup ecosystem.
