One year has passed, and the families of those killed or disappeared during Tanzania's election violence are still waiting. They have no answers, no justice, and no clear sign that anyone in power is working to give them either.
Human Rights Watch has documented what happened to people who were killed or went missing in the aftermath of the elections. The families left behind are carrying that grief alone, with no accountability from the state to help them make sense of their loss.
The absence of justice is not a quiet absence. For these families, every day without answers is another day the wound stays open. And with no meaningful investigation reported, the question of who is responsible remains unanswered.
What happens when a government simply moves on? That is the reality these families are living, and it is a question Tanzania has not yet chosen to answer.
