Sudan: Diplomatic Setbacks Undermine U.S. Approach to Sudan

Washington's push for a ceasefire in Sudan has hit a wall, and the cracks are showing. Over the past two weeks, the United States has faced a string of diplomatic setbacks in its efforts to pressure Sudanese authorities into signing a ceasefire agreement.

The core problem, according to reporting out of Khartoum, is twofold: Sudanese authorities were not prepared to sign the deal, and the situation on the ground simply did not support the terms being pushed. Forcing a signature under those conditions was never going to hold.

For a region already exhausted by conflict and broken promises, the question now is what Washington does next, and whether a different approach might actually bring the fighting closer to an end.
