South African jazz legend Abdullah Ibrahim dies at 91

Abdullah Ibrahim played piano for eight decades, and in doing so helped define what South African jazz sounds like. The musician, known for weaving Cape Town's layered cultural sounds into a distinctly African jazz voice, has died at the age of 91.

His career stretched from the apartheid era, when he performed under the name Dollar Brand, through to the present day. That longevity alone speaks to a singular dedication to the music. He carried South African sound onto international stages at a time when his country was largely shut off from the world.

Ibrahim leaves behind a body of work that shaped not just a genre but a sense of what African musical identity could be on a global scale. For fans and fellow musicians across the continent and beyond, the silence he leaves is a loud one.
