Fifty years on, Soweto is getting ready to mark one of the most significant moments in South African history. Jozi My Jozi's Soweto chapter has pulled together a lineup of events to commemorate the 1976 uprising, the student-led rebellion that shifted the course of the country forever.
The anniversary carries real weight. Young people took to the streets on 16 June 1976 to protest the apartheid government's decision to impose Afrikaans as a medium of instruction in Black schools, and what happened that day reverberated far beyond Soweto's streets.
The events being organised promise to be more than a moment of remembrance. They are shaping up to be a living tribute to the generation that refused to be silent. Watch this space.
