Sefi Atta’s The Gèlè Gang, a Witty Novel About Matchmaking Nigerian American Mothers in Atlanta, Is Coming February 2027
Sefi Atta is returning to fiction with a novel built around something deeply familiar to anyone who has grown up in the Nigerian diaspora: mothers who take matchmaking very seriously. The Gèlè Gang is set among Nigerian American women in Atlanta, and the title alone will make anyone who has survived a family wedding smile.
The book is scheduled for February 2027, published by Interlink Books. Atta, who previously won the Soyinka Prize, is bringing her sharp, character-driven voice to a story that sounds equal parts comedy and social commentary.
Details beyond the premise are still close to the chest, but if Atta's track record is any indication, there is a lot more going on beneath the surface of these aunties and their agendas. February 2027 feels far away, but it gives you time to catch up on her backlist.
