Two custom birthday looks. One unforgettable celebration. Big Brother Naija Season 9 star Nelly Mbonu marked her birthday this June in fashion that had absolutely nothing to do with playing it safe. She commissioned two original pieces from designers Mub Rik and Josiphiah Michael, and the results were the kind of dressing that makes people stop scrolling.
The first look built its drama from the ground up. A corset-inspired silhouette sat on a sheer illusion base, with black beadwork running in sharp vertical lines across the bodice before dissolving into cascading strands of black and gold micro-beads from the hips to the floor. Movement was the whole point, and every step delivered. But the element that truly set the look apart sat above the neckline: a metallic gold jawpiece that curved around her face and extended into sculpted ear pieces, paired with a coordinating neckpiece. Together, they shifted the entire outfit from eveningwear into something that felt closer to body architecture.
Then Nelly changed the conversation completely. Her second look was all volume and drama, wrapping her in oversized layers of textured charcoal-black fabric with soft dusty-pink linings peeking out from beneath each fold. The shape called to mind a rose mid-bloom, revealing new angles and details depending on where you were standing.
The styling for this second moment was deliberately stripped back. Hair slicked away from the face, jewellery kept to a minimum, nothing competing with the structure of the garment itself. When the clothes speak this loudly, the edit does the work.
