Rwanda looks set to host Africa's first Formula One (F1) Grand Prix in more than three decades after South Africa's arts, sports and culture minister conceded that the country has pipped his nation to the post.
Gayton McKenzie, who previously said that South Africa was working "methodically" to meet the strict criteria for hosting an F1 race, congratulated Rwanda but remains hopeful that South Africa will also be granted a race.
"We are happy for Rwanda's 2030 F1. They have worked on it longer than SA and deserve it. Remember though that one country, Italy, has had two F1s a year, and some react like a continent of 55 countries can only get one. SA will get F1, even before 2030."
An official announcement has yet to be made, but reports indicate that Rwanda could join the F1 calendar from 2030.
