Pictures and Recap: The African Book Festival Berlin 2026

Three days at tak, Theater Aufbau Kreuzberg, and the eighth edition of the African Book Festival Berlin had done exactly what a good literary weekend should do: pull people into a room and make them not want to leave.

Running from May 29 to 31, 2026, this year's festival carried the theme Welcome to the Club, a title that felt less like a slogan and more like a genuine invitation. The Kreuzberg venue, already a beloved fixture in Berlin's cultural scene, gave the weekend the kind of intimate energy that big conference halls simply cannot manufacture.

Eight editions in, the African Book Festival Berlin has quietly built something rare: a consistent, dedicated space for African literature in the heart of Europe. That kind of staying power deserves to be talked about.

What happened inside those three days? The conversations, the readings, the faces in the crowd. That story is worth telling in full.
