Onyinyechi Basil Is Representing Nigeria at Miss Universe 2025

Onyinyechi Basil, a 25-year-old biochemistry graduate, is heading to Bangkok this November to represent Nigeria at the 74th edition of Miss Universe. The competition takes place on 21 November 2025 at the Impact Challenger Hall in Nonthaburi, Thailand, with 120 contestants from around the world in attendance.

What makes Onyinyechi's story especially compelling is the personal loss behind her public work. After losing her brother, she channelled her grief into action and founded Nwanyi Bu Ife, a group focused on making maternal care more accessible across Nigeria. She later launched the Reach Moms Initiative, which connects women in rural communities to hospital access, childbirth education, and essential supplies.

Growing up with her father in a small apartment, Onyinyechi has been open about how that season of her life shaped her drive. Her Miss Universe biography leans into this background, framing it as proof that ambition does not require a head start.

Denmark's Victoria Kjær Theilvig will crown her successor on the night. Nigeria's place on that stage belongs to a woman whose crown, if it comes, would sit above a very real body of work. Whether she takes the title or not, the conversation around maternal health in underserved Nigerian communities will have found one of its biggest platforms yet.
