Nigeria: Nigerians Spend N50bn On U.S. Visa Applications - Report

Fifty billion naira. That is how much Nigerians paid in U.S. visa application fees between 2023 and 2024, and a good number of those applicants had nothing to show for it at the end of the process.

The spending came during a period when Washington was actively tightening its immigration controls and putting applicants under closer scrutiny. The result was a significant drop in approval rates, meaning that billions of naira in fees were collected even as more Nigerians were turned away at the consular gate.

Visa application fees are non-refundable, so every declined application represents money that does not come back. For many middle-class Nigerians stretching budgets to cover fees, documentation, and travel to interview appointments, a rejection lands as a serious financial blow on top of a personal one.

The numbers raise a question worth sitting with: as the barriers to entry grow steeper, how long will Nigerians keep paying a premium for the chance to simply be considered?
