New York playwright wins African based international prize

A New York playwright has taken home an African-based international prize for short-form theatre, beating out a field that stretched across six continents.

The 2025 competition called for scripts running between ten and fifteen minutes. By the time submissions closed, organisers had received 266 entries from writers in 23 countries.

With that kind of global reach, the question worth sitting with is this: what does it mean for an African prize to be drawing talent from New York, and who else from the continent was in the running?
