NCDs fastest-growing disease burden in Nigeria — Official

Non-communicable diseases are now the fastest-growing disease burden in Nigeria, according to a government official. The declaration signals a significant shift in the country's public health priorities, as conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and cancer increasingly compete with infectious diseases for attention and resources.

On a more encouraging note, the official pointed to real progress in maternal and newborn health. The Maternal and Neonatal Mortality Reduction Innovation Initiative, known as MAMII, has brought maternal deaths down by 22 per cent and newborn deaths by 10 per cent. Those are meaningful numbers, and they reflect what targeted, well-resourced intervention can actually achieve.

The question now is whether Nigeria can apply that same focus to the rising tide of non-communicable diseases before the burden becomes truly unmanageable.
