Liberia: Protest Coalition Calls for U.S. Intervention in U.S.$19m Drug Scandal

Thirty-seven civil society groups, political parties, student organizations, and pro-democracy advocates have joined forces under the Liberia Protest Coalition to knock on America's door. The coalition has formally petitioned the United States Embassy in Monrovia, asking Washington to back an international investigation into a US$19 million drug scandal shaking the country.

The petition signals growing frustration among ordinary Liberians who feel domestic accountability mechanisms cannot be trusted to handle a case of this size. By going directly to the U.S. Embassy, the coalition is making a pointed statement: this matter is too big, and too serious, to stay local.

With more than 37 organizations now aligned behind the call, the pressure is only building. Whether the U.S. Embassy responds, and how, will say a great deal about the kind of international scrutiny Liberia's leadership is willing to accept.
