A road crash on the Malaba-Webuye highway turned into a major drug bust after a suspected trafficker fled the scene, leaving behind a haul of cannabis worth 1 million Kenyan shillings.
The seizure totalled 170 kilograms of cannabis. The chaos began when the suspect's vehicle was involved in a collision that fatally killed a motorcyclist. Rather than stay at the scene, the suspect abandoned the vehicle and disappeared, leaving authorities to discover what was inside.
Police recovered the full consignment from the abandoned vehicle. The fatal crash that triggered the find has drawn attention to the Malaba-Webuye corridor, a route that security agencies have flagged as a channel for cross-border drug movement in western Kenya.
The suspect remains at large. With a street-value haul of that size left behind in a panic, the question now is who sent it, and where it was headed.
