A room full of journalists and media leaders gathered recently to unveil a book honouring Dele Giwa, the iconic Nigerian editor who was killed by a parcel bomb in 1986.
Ray Ekpu, a former colleague of Giwa, spoke at the event and explained that the book was created to preserve Giwa's legacy. Ekpu also pointed to a larger purpose: drawing fresh attention to the enduring importance of journalism, truth, and accountability in public life.
Nearly four decades after his death, Giwa's story clearly still has something urgent to say to the generation of journalists working today. The question is whether the industry is listening.
