Fifa to pay Somali referee Artan full World Cup fee

Omar Artan packed his bags, prepared his whistle, and earned his place on the global stage. Then a visa denial stopped him at the door.

The Somali referee was selected to officiate at the World Cup but was denied entry into the United States, meaning he never got to step onto the pitch. Despite missing the tournament entirely, Fifa has confirmed it will pay Artan his full tournament fee.

It is a small but meaningful gesture, one that acknowledges the work Artan put in to reach that level. Qualifying to referee at a World Cup is no casual achievement. The training, the assessments, the years of officiating, all of that counts, whether or not a visa officer agrees.

What this moment really puts on the table is a bigger conversation about access, documentation, and which African professionals get to show up when it matters most.
