Ebola: Nigeria case highly similar to Kenya infection – Minister

Nigeria's health minister has flagged a strong similarity between the country's reported Ebola case and infections recently recorded in Kenya, raising fresh concerns about the spread of the Bundibugyo strain of the virus across the continent.

Kenya has confirmed nine cases of Ebola caused by the Bundibugyo virus, and one person has died. That strain is distinct from the more widely known Zaire strain and has historically been less common, which makes the cross-border pattern worth watching closely.

Health authorities in both countries are now under pressure to trace contacts, tighten surveillance, and communicate clearly with the public. With West and East Africa now both in the picture, the question of how far this particular strain has traveled is one nobody can afford to leave unanswered.
