Nigeria has a National Care Policy on the books, and now advocates want to see it actually put to work across the country. The policy, according to the ministry, formally recognises unpaid care work, which is a quiet but significant shift in how the government accounts for the labour, often done by women, that keeps households running.
The policy also calls for regulated childcare and elderly care services, along with minimum standards for care centres nationwide. Backing all of this is a proposed National Care Fund, which would give the framework some financial muscle.
Caring Africa is pushing for full implementation, and the real question now is whether that push will translate into action on the ground.
