Thirty-nine community elders from Zamfara State are currently being held by bandits after a reconciliation meeting went terribly wrong. The men were among a 50-member delegation that had traveled to meet with a notorious bandit leader in what appears to have been a grassroots attempt at peace talks.
The effort was not backed by the state government, which has publicly opposed any form of negotiation with criminal groups operating in the region. Despite that opposition, the delegation pressed ahead, and the consequences have been devastating. Eleven members of the group managed to return home. The fate of the remaining 39 is unknown.
Zamfara has long been one of Nigeria's most volatile states when it comes to banditry, with communities caught between the violence of armed groups and the limitations of official security responses. This latest incident raises urgent questions about what options ordinary citizens feel they have left, and what happens when those options collapse.
