Nigeria's coordinating minister of health, Mr Pate, is raising an alarm that might surprise many: the livestock sector is consuming more antibiotics than the human health sector, and that gap has real consequences for all of us.
The concern sits at the heart of antimicrobial resistance, commonly known as AMR. Mr Pate stressed that resistance does not stay in one lane. It moves freely between humans, animals, and the environment, meaning that what happens on a poultry farm or cattle ranch can eventually show up in a hospital ward.
That reality makes this a conversation that cannot be left to doctors alone. Mr Pate is calling for collaboration across sectors, bringing together agriculture, public health, and environmental bodies to tackle the problem together before it outpaces the medicines we have left.
The question now is whether that cross-sector cooperation will move fast enough to matter.
