Africa's $438m August: Bigger cheques, global ambitions

At first glance, August was an exceptional month for African startup funding.

African startups raised approximately $438m during the month, according to TechCabal Insights tracking, putting August among the strongest funding months of 2026. Yet one transaction fundamentally shaped the picture. Moove's $250m Series C alone represented roughly 57% of all capital tracked during the month.

That concentration matters.

Remove Moove from the equation, and August falls to around $188m. Remove the three largest transactions, Moove, Jumia and Yellow Card, and the remaining companies represented less than $100m.
