The African Feminist Initiative at Penn State has named five grant recipients for 2026, and the range of their work is striking. The scholars and artists selected are researching and creating across subjects that include parliamentary politics in Uganda, Black womanhood in South Africa's Diamond City, and feminist responses to the climate crisis.
The cohort also takes on Black masculinities across three continents and women's cultural production in the Sahel, two areas that rarely get this kind of dedicated institutional backing at the same time. Together, the five projects map a broad and urgent set of conversations happening across the African continent and its diaspora.
Watch this space as these grant recipients move their work forward. The findings and creative outputs coming out of this cohort are ones we will want to be paying close attention to.
