With Dar es Salaam set to host Africa50's general shareholders meeting in August, Tanzania is looking to draw on the pan‑African infrastructure platform's expertise to expedite the delivery of priority projects. Tanzania became the 34th shareholder of Africa50 in 2023 and is working closely with the platform to build a pipeline of bankable infrastructure projects aligned with its national development plan. Focus areas include power transmission lines, off‑grid renewable energy, clean‑energy transition initiatives and transport and logistics infrastructure.
Africa50 is in discussions with the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO), the national utility, to build high-voltage transmission lines through a public private partnership (PPP) project. The project promises to expand and modernise Tanzania's national transmission network, improve grid reliability and absorb additional capacity from some of the country's newly constructed renewable power plants.
Africa50 is also progressing in negotiations with Tanzania's government to develop a mini liquefied natural gas (LNG) project in partnership with Egypt's Rosetta Energy Solutions. Valued at more than $100m, the project will strengthen Tanzania's gas distribution network through modular and movable LNG units. The use of modular technology is designed to extend gas access beyond existing pipeline corridors, bringing energy to remote regions at a fraction of the cost that would be incurred to deliver the gas conventionally. Analysts say the project will strengthen domestic energy security and accelerate the transition to clean cooking solutions.
