Africa: Zambia's Poisoned Children Have Waited Long Enough. Africa Needs to Act.

A child rights complaint against Zambia is now sitting before the African Union, and the children waiting on that decision have already waited far too long.

The African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child, the AU's dedicated child rights body, is currently considering what advocates are calling a landmark complaint against Zambia. The case centers on children who have been harmed by lead poisoning, a crisis that has quietly devastated young lives while accountability has moved at a crawl.

Human Rights Watch is among those pushing for the AU body to act, arguing that African institutions need to step up when national governments fall short in protecting their most vulnerable citizens. The complaint represents one of the first times this particular AU mechanism has been used to hold a member state answerable for environmental harm to children.

For the families affected, the stakes are not procedural. Lead poisoning causes irreversible neurological damage in children, and every month that passes without meaningful intervention is a month that cannot be given back. The question now is whether the AU's child rights machinery will prove itself equal to the moment.
