Abdullah Ibrahim passed away peacefully in Germany after a short illness, his family has confirmed. The legendary South African jazz composer and cultural icon was 91 years old.
Born in Cape Town, Ibrahim became one of the most celebrated figures in African jazz, carrying the sound and spirit of his home city to stages and concert halls across the world. His music was inseparable from his identity, and his identity was inseparable from South Africa.
The loss lands heavily across the African arts community. Ibrahim was not simply a musician. He was a living bridge between the streets of District Six, the struggles of his generation, and the global language of jazz. That bridge, built over nine decades, will not easily be replaced.
