Africa: From Commonwealth Connections to Economic Opportunity - Expanding Africa-Caribbean Trade Linkages
Commonwealth leaders are heading to Antigua and Barbuda this November, and the agenda is anything but light. Rising trade tensions, geopolitical shocks, and supply chain disruptions are all on the table, sitting alongside issues that have lingered for years: high debt, limited access to affordable finance, climate vulnerability, and poor connectivity between member nations.
For African and Caribbean countries especially, these challenges land close to home. Both regions carry significant debt burdens and remain exposed to climate events that can wipe out years of economic progress in a single season. The conversation in Antigua and Barbuda has the potential to be more than diplomatic ceremony if leaders are willing to use the moment to push for concrete trade linkages between Africa and the Caribbean.
The Commonwealth gathering offers a rare opening. When African and Caribbean delegations sit in the same room, the opportunity to build direct economic relationships, rather than routing trade through third-party Western markets, becomes very real. The question is whether this November's summit turns that opening into something you can actually measure.
