Africa: African Development Bank Convenes African Debt Management Practitioners in Kigali to Strengthen Debt Transparency and Accountability

One hundred and fifty policymakers, debt managers, and public finance experts gathered in Kigali, Rwanda, for five days to work through one of the continent's most pressing economic challenges: how African governments track, report, and take ownership of what they owe.

The workshop, convened by the African Development Bank, brought together participants from 22 African transition states. The focus was practical, centered on building the kind of transparency and accountability frameworks that help countries manage public debt responsibly and communicate it clearly to citizens and creditors alike.

Kigali as a host city feels fitting. Rwanda has become a reference point on the continent for governance reform and financial discipline, and gathering this particular group of practitioners there sends a message about the standard being aimed for.

With 22 transition states represented in one room, the conversations happening behind those closed doors carry real weight. What comes next, and whether the commitments made in Kigali translate into policy back home, is the part worth watching.
