Absa becomes first African financial institution to invest in Lendable's blended-finance strategy

Absa has become the first African bank to invest in Lendable's MSME Fintech Credit Fund 2, a blended-finance vehicle backing next-generation financial services companies across emerging markets. The fund closed oversubscribed at US$255 million, and Absa participated through its senior notes as well as a subscription line to support the fund's capital deployment. The senior tranche carries an investment-grade rating, which remains a relatively uncommon feature among blended-finance vehicles of this kind.

The move is significant because blended-finance private credit strategies like this one have historically been the domain of international development finance institutions, family offices, and foundations. Absa's entry signals that African financial institutions are increasingly ready to co-invest alongside global partners in strategies designed to serve their own markets. The capital will flow to fintech lenders in Africa, Asia, and Latin America that expand financial access for underserved small businesses and individuals.

For Absa, the investment fits within a broader strategy to support sustainable and inclusive economic growth while deepening the bank's footprint in innovative financing solutions. Shyam Ganda, Lead Specialist in Banking at Absa Corporate and Investment Banking, noted that the transaction shows how African institutions can participate more actively in global private credit markets and help channel capital toward businesses serving the real economy.

Lendable CEO Chris Wehbe described Absa's participation as a powerful vote of confidence, both in the firm and in the businesses it backs. He framed it as evidence that local institutions now see the same opportunity international investors have long recognised, and said the firm expects this to be the first of many such partnerships. Whether other African banks follow Absa's lead is the question worth watching.
