2027: YPP vice-presidential candidate sets conditions for opposition coalition

The memory of 2015 is still fresh for many Nigerians, and the Young Progressives Party's vice-presidential candidate is making sure it stays that way. As opposition groups begin positioning for 2027, the YPP's candidate is drawing a clear line: removing President Bola Tinubu from power is not, on its own, enough.

The candidate's conditions for joining any opposition coalition center on governance reform. The argument is straightforward. Swapping one administration for another, without first agreeing on how Nigeria will actually be run differently, risks delivering the same letdown that followed the 2015 transition from Goodluck Jonathan to Muhammadu Buhari.

It is a pointed reminder that Nigerian voters have been here before. The excitement of change gave way to frustration when the structures beneath the surface stayed the same. For the YPP, any credible coalition conversation in 2027 has to start with that lesson, not end with it.

The question now is whether the larger opposition parties will take those conditions seriously, or treat them as noise from a smaller player in a crowded field.
