12 June: Delta residents decry huge gap between rich, poor

People in Delta State are not mincing words about what daily life feels like right now. Residents say the economic pressure is relentless, and the distance between those who have and those who do not has never felt wider or more visible.

"Things are very difficult, people are barely surviving," one resident said plainly. That kind of directness tells you something. When ordinary people speak this clearly, without softening it, the situation has long passed the point of concern.

Democracy Day is meant to be a moment of reflection on what Nigeria's return to civilian rule has delivered for its citizens. For many in Delta, the honest answer is: not enough.
